Placards placed outside Sheffield Cathedral where ‘No Stump City’ installed their banners and leafleted.  A protest against the felling of Sheffield trees and the shameful £2.2 billion PFI contract that Sheffield City Council have signed with Amey.

    1. The tree felling in Sheffield has become national news. There have been dozens of arrests at protests. The link below shows a woman being arrested for blowing a plastic toy trumpet!

On one occasion the police knocked on residents doors at 5am to get them to move their cars. They had turned up with tow trucks to take away cars belonging to people who didn’t comply and on that day a couple of people in their 60’s were arrested. It’s shameful to think that the council, the police, the tow truck company and the private contractors sat around in a meeting plotting and conspiring a dawn raid to fell a few trees.
Perhaps you could share the website below with locals who might learn from the experience in Sheffield. I’m sure they would be willing to share ideas 🙂
Part of the campaign in Sheffield was to tie yellow ribbons on all the trees which are to be felled. It’s a very visual way for people to appreciate the extent of the work being carried out.
Good luck with saving your trees
      Best wishes

  1. What would be useful is a list of councillors and how they voted for the tree felling contract in the first place; all the election literature we’re getting seems to avoid coming clean on this!

    1. You make a good point but sadly getting the truth about anything is becoming more difficult. It will be interesting to see what happens in the local elections…
      Best wishes

  2. I’ve heard about this tree-felling in Sheffield and it is indeed shameful, it is a disgrace. Similar things have not happened in such a scale here in Bristol, but I must say that the image Sheffield Council is projecting would not in my mind be too far from the image that the council projects in Bristol.
